Life would be so much easier if only we could nail what we are here on this earth to do. Once there is a clear direction, we can plan, make decisions and start creating in the comfortable knowledge that we are on track. Hmmmmmm.
My experience has been that such certainty rarely materialises. Instead, I am often left wondering whether I’m doing the ‘right’ thing or not. Now there is an interesting debate – is there such a concept as a ‘right’ or a ‘wrong’ thing. These days I believe there are helpful/unhelpful, aligned/unaligned things that we can do but nothing is ever right or wrong. Anyway, back to knowing when you are on purpose.
Some people seem to have a ‘big mission’. For example, I am here to persuade farmers to look after the soil on their land without using fertilisers. Such a sense of direction can be all consuming and become a powerful passion. In effect, people with this sense of purpose, have got a clear view of the whole ‘map’ and know their destination.
An alternative approach is simply to follow your intuition step by step. Four years ago, I was living a comfortable life near Peterborough in the UK, when I got an inner nudge that it was time to move. That I was going to move was a done deal. Where I was going to move to materialised later. After four house moves in two years, I met my new wife, and we are now living in a beautiful house on the Welsh / Shropshire border. I have never been to this part of the country before and could never have foreseen that I would end up here. Each step on the way revealed itself when a decision was needed, and I trusted my inner voice to make good choices.
The point I am trying to make is that often, there is no clear sense of direction, and instead, having enough faith to take the next step and the next is a way of unfolding purpose. In this case the ‘map’ only becomes clear when it has been walked.
Looking back, the intuitive choices I made were guided by a ‘lightness of being’. The decision that was best for me felt easy to take, my being expanded when I thought about it and there was very little doubt when it came to making things happen. The feelings were both subtle and obvious.
Now that I am in a good place, work that feels important to do nags away at me until I start acting. Then life flows again. I am very aware that what feels aligned today may completely change in a years’ time – and that is OK.
